Marble - Wednesday, August 3, 2011

Physical origins

Marble is a rock resulting from metamorphism of sedimentary carbonate rocks, most commonly limestone or dolomite rock. Metamorphism causes variable recrystallization of the original carbonate mineral grains.

The resulting marble rock is typically composed of an interlocking mosaic of carbonate crystals. Primary sedimentary textures and structures of the original carbonate rock (protolith) have typically been modified or destroyed.

Pure white marble is the result of metamorphism of a very pure (silicate-poor) limestone or dolomite protolith. The characteristic swirls and veins of many colored marble varieties are usually due to various mineral impurities such as clay, silt, sand, iron oxides, or chert which were originally present as grains or layers in the limestone.

Green coloration is often due to serpentine resulting from originally high magnesium limestone or dolostone with silica impurities. These various impurities have been mobilized and recrystallized by the intense pressure and heat of the metamorphism.

Variations of whiteness of pure marbles are due to the mixture of foreign substances. Such impurities form bands, streaks and clouds. Black and grayish shades are due to graphite; pinks, reds are mainly due to the presence of manganese oxides or hematite.

Bathroom Design 101 - Thursday, December 2, 2010

Bathroom Design 101

With today’s high pace lifestyle and current recession, there are less andless inexpensive places to relax and unwind.  One way to get-a-way whilestill staying at home is to turn your bathroom into an in-home sparetreat.   The bathroom is one of the most personal spaces in yourhouse.  It serves as both a place for personal hygiene as well as a spacefor rest and relaxation; therefore a great deal of attention should be given toits overall design.  Not only does remodelingyour bathroom make your home a more relaxing and enjoyable place, it can alsohelp to maximize the return on the investment when you sell your house.

The cost of bathroom remodeling can be as little or as much as youchoose.  Taking the time to add a new light fixture, a splash of vibratecolor with some glass tile,a new showerhead, glass, granite, marbleor vanity sink, can completely change the look and style of this small room and can be done forunder $1000.

Many choose to try to make the room larger by knocking down partitions orwalls, especially if you are looking to have separate shower and bathtub. But if the budgetcalls for something less drastic and expensive, try adding an above countersink, stain glass or mirrors.    Think about what your idealbathroom will look like and then prioritize your needs before your wants. This will save you both money and grief in the long run.

If the budget is tight, you need to figure out how you’re going to financeyour bathroom remodeling project.  You might want to use your savings or geta loan, this will determine what remodeling you will want to do.  Keepin mind, it will always be less expensive if you do not need to relocatethe plumbing fixtures, such as toilets or sinks, so if you are on a smallbudget, it is more economical to blend your currentbathroom layout into the overall new design.

Before beginning the remodeling, you also need to determine whether you'regoing to dothis yourself versus a professional licensed contractor.  Either way,you need to secure a building permit from your local city or countygovernment.  Failure to do so could ultimately make your remodelingproject much more costly due to fines.

Another way to add new life to your bathroom is to add a second sink, whichis a very popular design trend, allowing two people to use the bathroom at thesame time.  While figuring out what you want in the bathroom, plan and/orconsult with a designer or contractor for new ideas, check out magazinesand cut out pictures of designs that work with your overall ideas andstyles.  It is helpful to contractors and designers if you sketch out ongraph paper what you want your bathroom to look like.  It may seemoverwhelming but remodeling your bathroom will be worth every moment ofpeaceful tranquility in your new relaxing retreat.

Anticipation of moving into a new home - Thursday, December 2, 2010

Anticipation of moving into a new home is a joyful and exciting experience. It’s a lot of hard work too besides the financing part - remodeling the old home to put in the market, planning backyard for the new home etc.  Finding a good remodeling contractor will make our life much easier.

You’ve decided to remodel your bathroom in your house.  How do you go about finding an experienced and qualified contractor? Where do you begin?  First thing you need is a plan.

Planning: The work of locating a contractor starts long before the remodeling projects. Before your search, you need to have a clear plan on exactly what parts of your home need to be done - painting bedrooms, replacing floorings with granite, wood, slate, or travertine or adding moldings and tile in the  kitchen.  Exactly what are looking to do in your home?  After doing research and planning, after looking at your budget, you are ready to find your contractor.

Interviewing: Once you decide the extent of the remodeling projects, the processing of extensive interviewing begins.  A good place to start with talking with neighbors and friends, especially those thatyou know have had remodeling projects, to find contractors.  Some homeowners interview10 contractorsbefore making the decision. If you don’t want to go through the time-consuming process, you can should get estimates from at least three contractors and ask that they break down their estimate into sections, so you can see how much each item will cost such as wood flooring for the dining room, laminate flooring for the entry and bathrooms, and how much they will charge for under floor heating. The common mistake is to choose the first contractor they interviewed before looking further. You will make a better decision on which contractor will give you the best deal by comparing the costs on item base. When you talk with are modeling contractor, be sure to ask all the questions you need in order tofeel comfortable with your choice. Be sure that you feel comfortable that they can perform each type of flooring you choose, whether you desire wood flooring or doing. It saves money if one contractor can take care of all projects. For quality work, you end up with hiring a contractor for each project.

Reference Checking - Next, you should also ask each home remodeling contractor is they have experience installing wood flooring, laminate flooring and under floor heating. If they have installed all  three previously you should ask for references. This way you can contact a few of his previous clients to ask about the work they performed. Never use a contractor if he showed you lot of writing references in the interview.

Moving into a new home is a joyful and exciting experience when you have the reliable contractors to take care of the remodeling jobs.
